How long does the german shepherd dog live?
My bunny just died and he only lived two years. I want a pet that will live a fairly long time. So how long does the German Shepherd Dog live?
Until the day they die.
Which day that is depends on their genetics, their fitness, their owner's care.
It is believed that the average age of ALL dogs alive at any moment is less than 1 year, because so many die in their first year - of disease (especially parvovirus or distemper), being poisoned (such as slug bait or radiator anti-freeze), being run over or shot, or being starved.
The 6 GSDs I had in the last 23 years since I got my first computer were average 13 years, until my last developed a fast-growing cancer that saw her ready to die at 10¼ years. My oldest so far got to 15½ years.
A poll in a group I own asked "Regardless of cause, what was the age at which your last GSD died?".
Not everyone entered data, but from those who did, there were clusters at 8, 13 and 14 years, with an average life-span of 10 years 11 months.
A rescue worker claimed a couple reaching 17 years but, as it is rare to know the birthdate of a rescued pooch, her figures could not be accepted.
As far as I can remember, all 3 of the last 3 holders of the Guinness Record for canine longevity were farm dogs that worked throughout most of their lives, so kept fit for a long time. I think the last was either an Australian Cattle Dog or an Australian Kelpie.
I'm told that, on average, Pekingese live the longest, despite their deformities.
