What can I do to cheer up a friend who is so depressed this Holiday season?
Sorry I didn't add details. It is my first question:
My friend is female and a friend of 20 plus years. Her birthday is comming up on the 21st and I have planned a small party with friends and family. Financial problems Has not taken a day off since Thanksgiving and works nights in a factory.
What a blessing you are in this friend's life--to care enough to write and ask for suggestions to help!
First of all, just allowing depressed people a loving, listening
ear can be of great benefit.....but though well meaning people
sometimes attempt to "push" depressed people into the
Christmas spirit.....that just does not work. Depression is not
something a person can turn off and on at will, just like any other illness.....it is there and cannot just be changed by strength of will or determination. I am not saying that you would do that---but anyone else who reads this answer may
find themselves in a like situation and it is just good information to realize that depression is not of ones choosing, it is a form of illness.
Cheer your friend by doing kindnesses you know are meaningful to him or her---perhaps a shared cup of coffee
in a local cafe, or a meal out together.....if that person is
not up to going out--then maybe a meal brought to his or her home would be pleasing.
No matter what you do, if you do it with love and care in your heart, it is going to be a good thing. It may not lift the depression, your friend may not even be able to express how meaningful your efforts are---but in his or her inner being,
your show of care will mean a lot.
There are also two programs online that I am aware of, that
I have either been a part of or contacted in the past to lift
the spirits of those I care for or heard about through others---
those programs are:
Guardian angel artists: www.gaartist.com
This program exists "to bring comfort and hope to people in need"---this is due to any type of issue that is bringing
a person's spirit down---illness, grief, etc. This is an
absolutely wonderful group, and if you supply a loved ones
name and address, they will receive angel art and simple
caring messages from across the country. The people I have done this for have felt so blessed and have reported back
to me afterward how it lifted their spirit when they would
receive these in the mail. So that is one option. No cost to you.
The other is:
Angels for Hope

This program is one in which you provide the name and address of the person and someone will (at your choosing)
make a crocheted (and beautiful, if I must say so myself
as I did make these for a time myself) angel, butterfly,
or smiley face and send it on. No cost to you.
I must also say that these programs maintain anonymity,
so your loved ones names and addresses are protected
by the organization itself, they are not given to any other
program nor sold to any organizations for profit.
It is just amazing what a little love, thought, and care can do for another. I know you are a special person just because
you took the time and care already to write and ask what
you can do for your friend---I am sure you are already quite
a blessing in your depressed friend's life---good for you!
