Is it ever too late to learn a musical instrument?
I am 21 years old and I am considering studying a musical instrument like the violin or the cello as a hobby or break from school. I can't read the notes since I only learned, and forgot about it, when I was in elementary school. I do want to learn how to play even if it means reviewing the basics of music. Is it difficult to learn at my age? Also, is it difficult to look for instructors being an adult and all. Please help. Thank you.
It is never too late to start an instrument as a hobby. As long as you're realistic about your goals (i.e., you won't make a career as an Eastman violin professor) you will be fine. Music is supposed to be fun and that's all that matters.
As someone already mentioned, most teachers are more than happy to take on an adult beginner. I have a 40 yr old beginning flutist (I'm only 25) and she is doing great. I don't personally know any teachers outside the university setting who wouldn't take an adult.
